How Do You Determine If Your Lawn Needs Aeration?

Most lawns can benefit from aeration. However it’s especially important to aerate heavily-used lawns with thatch layers greater than a half inch and in soils that are mostly clay. You can test your soil by pealing back a section to check the depth of the roots. If they’re only a few inches deep then your lawn could probably benefit from core aeration.

When Should Core Aeration be Done?

Because the aeration process is stressful on lawns, it should only be done during periods just before active growth is expected. In Michigan it’s best to do it in the early spring or early fall.
